Verdict

Retell AI is a developer platform: it supplies the engine, telephony and APIs, and your developers or an agency build the receptionist on top. A plumbing company should not buy it directly; a company building software for plumbers might. Pricing is pay-as-you-go with no monthly fee, from about $0.07 to $0.31 a minute all-in depending on the model and voice you choose.

This is an Editorial Preview. We have not published a numeric rating for Retell AI because our structured testing is not complete. Facts below are sourced and dated; anything unverified is labeled.

Strengths

  • No monthly platform fee; pay only for minutes used
  • Published component rates and an all-in range
  • 20 concurrent calls and 10 knowledge bases included free

Limitations

  • Not a finished receptionist — engineering required
  • Effective rate varies four-fold with model and voice choices
  • Ongoing maintenance burden
  • No human backup

This site reviews Retell AI as a platform, not a turnkey product, because that is what it is. There is no receptionist to switch on. There is an engine, and the receptionist behavior must be written, tested and maintained by an engineer. If that sentence describes nobody at your company, the rest of this review is a reason to keep scrolling.

Answer

Inbound answering around the clock is supported once an agent is built, as is outbound calling and multi-language support. Retell has no industry specialization; everything trade-specific comes from your build. Call recording and transcripts are listed as platform features.

Understand and capture

What the agent understands and captures is a function of the prompt and tools your developer writes. A well-built Retell agent can capture a structured job request as cleanly as any packaged tool. A poorly built one will confidently capture the wrong thing. The platform gives you the recording and transcript to find out which.

Qualify

Qualification is custom logic. There is no default grading of callers. For a software company serving a trade, this is an advantage: the qualification rules can be exactly the ones its customers use. For an individual contractor, it is unpaid engineering.

Schedule

Appointment scheduling is marked partial because it requires custom function or tool integration. Your developer wires the calendar, writes the conflict check and handles the failure cases. That is a solved problem for an engineering team and an expensive one for anyone else.

Route

Call transfers are supported. CRM integration is marked partial and is achieved through custom integration. There is no human backup. Routing rules are code.

Follow through

Outbound calling makes automated confirmations and callbacks possible, and the integration list is pending verification. Follow-through is again something you build: what triggers the call, what it says, and what it records.

What it costs

Checked on retellai.com/pricing on September 7, 2026. There is no monthly platform fee. Voice infrastructure is $0.055 a minute, and you add a language model ($0.003 to $0.16 a minute), text-to-speech ($0.015 to $0.04) and telephony ($0.015), for a published all-in range of $0.07 to $0.31 a minute. Phone numbers are $2 a month each, 20 concurrent calls are free, and new accounts get $10 in credits. Optional add-ons include a knowledge base at $0.005 a minute.

For scale: 300 minutes of calls, the allowance on Torklio's $99 Starter, would cost between $21 and $93 in Retell usage, and a realistic build with a mid-tier model and a premium voice lands near the top of that range. The number that matters is not on the pricing page: the developer who builds and maintains the agent. That is where a trade owner's money goes, and it is why the platform is cheap and the receptionist is not.

What a build actually involves

For a company deciding whether to build on Retell, it helps to name the work. A working trade receptionist is not a prompt; it is a set of pieces that each need an owner.

  • The conversation design: greeting, questions, what the agent may and may not promise.
  • A knowledge source for services, hours and service area, kept current as prices change.
  • Calendar tools: availability lookup, conflict check, the write, and what to say when the write fails.
  • Transfer rules and the fallback when nobody picks up.
  • Recording and transcript review, so somebody hears what callers actually experienced.
  • Monitoring for the day a model or voice change alters behavior.

Which trades it fits

No trade directly. The buyer is a software company, franchise group or agency building a voice product for a trade. That could be a platform serving HVAC dealers, a franchise system for garage-door installers, or an agency building for electrical contractors. An individual shop should choose a packaged receptionist.

Bottom line for owners

If you employ developers or have hired an agency and want full control of the conversation, Retell is a credible foundation. If you are an owner comparing receptionists, it is the wrong category. Synthflow, once the no-code middle ground, now sells enterprise contracts from $30,000 a year, so for most trades the choice is between a developer platform like this and a packaged tool that covers the workflow with no code at all.
